(CNN) —Japan will soon begin releasing treated radioactive water into the
ocean following approval from the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog for a
controversial plan that comes 12 years after the Fukushima nuclear meltdown. The
plan to release treated wastewater has been in the works for years, with the
environment minister declaring in 2019 there were “no other options” as space
runs out to contain the contaminated material.

Thai parliament blocks election-winner’s bid to become

Thailand’s parliament blocked the prime ministerial nomination of the
winner of May’s nationwide elections, Pita Limjaroenrat, on Wednesday, a blow
to his progressive opposition party after nearly a decade of military-backed
rule. Out of the 715 members of parliament present, 395 voted to block the
second nomination, 312 voted for it, eight abstained and one – Pita himself –
didn’t cast the vote, according to the house speaker.

TV studios broke down, the SAG-AFTRA union enlisted Tom Cruise to lobby on

use of artificial intelligence, or AI.

EU Parliament to send
Committee on Foreign Affairs delegation to Taiwan

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A European Union (EU) Parliament's Committee on
Foreign Affairs (AFET) delegation will visit Taiwan from July 25-27, Taiwan’s
Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced on Tuesday (July 18).During the
visit, the delegation will meet with President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), Vice President Lai Ching-te (賴清德), and several

Ang Lee (李安) on Thursday (July 6) said that
Hong Kong-born American singer CoCo Lee (李玟) "will be
missed," in response to her sudden death. On Wednesday evening (July 5),
Coco's sister Nancy Lee (李思林) said Coco had attempted suicide on
Sunday (July 2) and, despite efforts by physicians to save her, died at age 48.

Taipei Summer Festival
to light up Dadaocheng Wharf

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — An event featuring music, fireworks, and fun-packed
activities is taking place at Taipei’s Dadaocheng Wharf and Yanping Riverside
Park between July 1 and Aug. 20.Running for 51 days, the Taipei Summer Festival
is an extension of the Taipei Valentine’s Day celebrations, according to the
city’s Department of Information and Tourism. Pyrotechnic shows are one of the
highlights, with eight sessions in total.
