Nearly 900 people have been arrested in Ecuador since Tuesday in a
national security operation to stop an outburst of gang violence, Ecuador’s

A terrifying Alaska Airlines incident on January 5 that left a hole in the
side of a Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft shortly after takeoff from Portland,
Oregon, has raised safety questions and put many would-be air travelers on
edge. Investigators are looking closely at the failure of a mid-cabin door plug
that detached during the flight, leading the Federal Aviation Administration to
ground all US 737 Max 9 aircraft that have the door plug feature until the
aircraft can be thoroughly inspected.

Ching-te: Taiwan achieved a victory for democracy

Taiwan achieved a victory for democracy and successfully blocked foreign
interference, presidential election winner Lai Ching-te (賴清德) said Saturday (Jan. 13). The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate
received more than 5.5 million votes, or 40%, with Kuomintang (KMT) candidate
Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜) receiving 4.6 million votes or
33%, and Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) Chair Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) ending with 3.6 million votes or 26%.

her sadness on Thursday (Dec. 28) over the death of a high school student

The Taiwan High Speed Rail Labor Union said it was dissatisfied with a
year-end bonus and salary adjustment plan and would hold a member's vote to determine
a labor strike. Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation (THSRC) responded that it

Novavax XBB vaccine now
available in Taiwan

To protect against COVID variants, doctors are encouraging the public to
get the XBB vaccine, which began distribution in Taiwan on Tuesday (Jan. 9). A
National Taiwan University doctor said two vaccine technologies target this
variant: one from Moderna, which is based upon mRNA technology, and one from
Novavax, which is based on traditional vaccine technology. Both vaccines have
similar side effects, per UDN.
