Chinese leader Xi Jinping (習近平) told President
Joe Biden during their recent San Francisco summit on Nov. 15 that Beijing will
unify Taiwan with China, NBC News reported on Wednesday (Dec. 20). Xi told
Biden during a meeting with a dozen American and Chinese officials that Beijing
prefers to take Taiwan peacefully, not by force, NBC News cited three current
and former U.S. officials as saying. Xi also added U.S. military predictions
that Beijing intends to invade Taiwan in 2025 or 2027 were incorrect as he has
not set a time frame, the report noted.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Labor (MOL) is targeting retirees
with a cash subsidy program beginning January 2024 to lure them back to the
workforce to address a labor shortage problem. According to the subsidy
program, those who are 55 and over and have either retired or been unemployed
for six consecutive months can qualify for a NT$30,000 (US$960) cash subsidy as
long as they can prove stable employment for three consecutive months, per UDN.

money discovers Taipei Metro's unseen act of kindness
Taipei Metro is renowned for its diverse services, and one lesser-known
but commendable initiative involves providing financial assistance to
individuals who may have forgotten their pass or money to purchase a ticket. In
a Facebook post on Saturday (Dec. 9), a user shared an incident where a
Japanese friend, who had forgotten his wallet and EasyCard for the Taipei MRT,
was pleasantly surprised to receive cash for a ticket. This was facilitated
after verifying his identity and signing an IOU at an MRT station.

sees snow for 1st time this winter

Snow fell for the first time this winter on Taipingshan on Thursday
evening (Dec. 21), while many rushed to catch a rare glimpse of snow in Taiwan.
It dropped to minus 6 C at around 11 p.m. on Thursday as snow began to fall in
the Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area, reported CNA. People flocked
to the area to enjoy the snowy scenery early on Friday morning (Dec. 22) to
